ELCIC National Bishop Larry Kochendorfer has shared an update with the church regarding Natalie Abudayyeh, a youth member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL), who remains detained after being taken from her student apartment (alongside three others) in Birzeit on June 2.

Abudayyeh is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Beit Jala, a graduate of Talitha Kumi Lutheran School, and a media and journalism student at Birzeit University.

In his letter, Bishop Kochendorfer shared an update received from ELCJHL Bishop Dr. Imad Haddad, noting that Abudayyeh appeared in court on June 14 and that proceedings will continue in the coming weeks. The three other women detained alongside Abudayyeh also remain in prison.

“We continue to be deeply shocked and grieved by the news of Natalie’s continued detention,” wrote Kochendorfer. “I invite you to continue your prayers for our siblings in Christ, in particular for Natalie and the three other women, for their safety, for their release, and for the youth in Palestine.”

The ELCIC will continue to share updates as they become available.
